The letters look kufic to me.  I would probably look at coins of the Seljuks rather than in India for the answers, if I knew what I was doins.

Hi Richie,

thanks for your reply, ( You have now two topics for this item )
I have searched in this area but without success sofar.  If you have a close look on the obverse side , it looks like that four fingers holding something.

regards

Perhaps we would see more in the coin if the image was sharper and/or in color and/or taken in sunlight.  It certainly wouldn't hurt trying.

Thanks Roland. But I am completely puzzled.  I tried looking at the coin from all directions and I tried sharpening the image. But honestly, I do not have a clue where this coin originates.  Sorry.  :(

I think one of the problems is that the coin is struck twice (see pearl border). My best guess is North Africa.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

the oval shape of this suggests to me one of those wire Kopeks....

Gosh, I don't see a cyrillic alphabet.
Where to place this coin?  Is the script Arabic?  Is the coin double struck?
What is the age of the coin?  It seems to be pre-colonial, perhaps pre Ottoman.  So, most likely it was minted after AH 1 and before AH 850 or so?
I can not disagree with Figleaf.  It could be from North Africa. If not, it could be from the "Middle East".  What to do?
I'll move it to "North Africa".  Any better ideas?
