Sultan of Khandesh
Nasir Shah
AE Falus
Dia: 16 mm
Weight: 9.18 gm
G&G# KH1

Obv.: Nasir al duniya wa’l din abu’l fath
Rev.: Nasir Shah al sultan

The sultanate of Khandesh was found in AH 784 by Malik Ahmad who had rebelled against the Bahmanid ruler Muhammad I. The dynasty is known as Faruqi dynasty from the title of the second Caliph Umar al Faruq, from whom Ahmad claimed descent. After Ahmad, Nasir Shah (AH 801-840) was the second sultan of Khandesh.

Coins of only two ruler of Khandesh have been found so far, the second ruler Nasir Shah and the last ruler Bahadur Shah. The coins of Nasir Shah are of similar style to the contemporary coins of Gujarat sultanate. At one time, they are thought to be coins of Gujarat.

There is an overview of the Faruqi dynasty here. There, Nasir Shah (the name on your coin) is called Nasir Khan, but it is also mentioned that Malik Nasir received the title Khan from the Gujarat sultan between 1417 and 1429 AD. I wonder if that means your coin can be dated 1399-1429 because he did not use the title Khan or 1417-1437, because Khan and Shah were considered equivalent?

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
