Eastern Celtic drachm
« on: February 10, 2020, 01:58:50 PM »
This is a drachm after the Alexander the Great model, but as you may see the design has been twisted and caricatured, beautifully I think. It was made in the vast area now covered by the Western Ukraine and Romania.

Eastern Europe. AR drachm, imitation of Alexander III of Macedon 300-200 BC.
Drachm AR 17 mm, 3.38 gr. Cf. Sergeev nr. 135: ‘Between the Balkans and the Dniepr basin’. Ostkeltischer Typenatlas (Göbl) 591,1.

Macedonians and Celts. They met face to face under Bolsios and Ptolemy Keraunos. Read all about it here (written by our member Cavaros). Immorality and cruelty fittingly punished.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
