Christopher Ironside's charming design features a macaque monkey, commonly known as a "Barbary ape".

This coin celebrates the Queen's Silver Jubilee: the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne.

In 2010, the 5 pence design, depicting the Barbary ape, was somewhat modified.

Previously the literal version of the denomination, "FIVE PENCE", had appeared at the top of the coin.

Meanwhile, the numeral had appeared at the bottom.

On the new coin, their positions were reversed.
