Nepal to Release Coins, Stamp for Guru Nanak's Birth Anniversary

Ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the Nepal government has decided to release three coins and a postal stamp to commemorate the occasion.

According to a report by Times of India, the sample coins have already been shown to the Sikh leadership in Nepal and are expected to be released soon.

Singh, the report suggests, also said that they had also initiated a process to take charge of Gurdwara Nanak Math situated on the banks of river Vishnumati in Kathmandu.

The report quoted Singh as saying that during one of his journeys, Guru Nanak had stayed in Kathmandu, while returning from Tibet, following which the then king had given around 200 acres of land.

Advisor to Gurdwara Guru Nanak Satsang committee Ajit Singh said that Nepal government's announcement of release of coins and postal stamp was a matter of great honour not only for the Sikhs living in Nepal but across the globe. "We are overwhelmed with Nepal government's gesture" he said.

It is good to know that Nepal Rashtra Bank has learnt its lesson well.
On 400th Ann of Guru Granth Sahib, it issued this coin and had to stop its release since the local Sikh community objected to its design. The book is never shown in open condition.

Government of India had also to cut a sorry figure when Gurta Gaddi coin was never allowed to be released by Sikh community. Later, Bhagat Singh coin was also delayed in issue for several years after release on the basis of objections. It was issued after several years with old specifications.

Interestingly, Guru Nanak coin will be issued by Pakistan and India too.

Nepal Is Reviving Its Sikh Connection And Has Just Launched Coins To Mark 550th Birth Anniversary Of Guru Nanak Dev

At a time when the world is getting increasingly polarised on religious lines, India's neighbouring country Nepal has launched three commemorative coins to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, who is said to have visited Balaju area in the outskirt of Kathmandu five hundred years ago.

This step by the country that has over 81 per cent Hindus in its population is being looked at and hailed as an attempt to revive its Sikh connect and send a larger message of endurance for all communities and countries throughout the globe.

The coins with the denominations of 100, 1000 and 2500 Nepalese rupees were jointly launched on Friday by Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Chiranjivi Nepal and Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri.
