Gold Commemorative Coin??
« on: April 25, 2019, 03:02:58 AM »
I saw some postings on Facebook about a new Rs 1000 5 grams gold commemorative coin being issued for the ICC Cricket World Cup. Is there any truth in this? If yes, do we expect to get it before the event starts or wait for a year?

There is another Rs 100 coin being issued, but if the stories are true this would be the first ever gold commemorative coin ever issued by India. People in the know— @kansal or @Pabitra please respond.

Dear Friends

I am aware that two coins  -one gold and one silver will be issued by Mumbai mint on ICC World Cup. Gold coin will be issued in red velvet boxes. Silver coin will be issued in blue velvet boxes.

However, I was not clear if they will be medallions or commemorative coins.

Now it seems that GOI may be issuing commemorative coins.

This appears to be some publicity material for the coins on ICC World Cup

It appears to be designed for selling to cricket fans during the World Cup in England.

There is need for Certificate of Authenticity ( with serial number, perhaps) as well some informative detail if you want to market such stuff there.

For all you know, it may be minted in UK itself, may be by Pobjoy or Tower mint.

I wonder if the diamond mint mark of Mumbai is just to show. The Mumbai mint usually uses M mint mark for such sets.

Yes Pabitra ji, you are right. Diamond mint mark appears to be bit out of place.

It will be inappropriate if any foreign mint makes replica of these coins without authorization from Government of India

The coins go on sale during the World Cup.
The first match is scheduled on May 30th.
Do you think the gazette notification and release function will be before that, making it an official issue?
Else, it will be like one of thousands of fantasy issues, which get minted by Tower and Pobjoy and marketed by company in Liechtenstein.
The mint mark may be only for advertising. The actual coin sold in UK may not have mint mark at all or may have another mint mark.
The coins released in India, may carry Mumbai mint mark.
Sanjay ji, since you need all mint marks, your budget is going to have a big deficit😜

Pabitra ji,

Don't worry, the Government of India will issue Gazette Notification soon.
