Maudry also post some silver Timurids with a countermark. They seem to straddle several rulers. Normally, countermarks are used as an emergency measure, be it economic (re-coinage) or military emergency. An emergency that lasts several rulers seems a bit odd. Do you have an idea as to why these coins were countermarke?

I would think it's also a fast way of a new ruler getting his name on the local coinage, no need for having to prepare the blanks , just one punch needs to be engraved. There must have been a means of getting coinage to pass through the system in order to C/mk them

Dear Vic, coin details:
Countermark reads from bottom to top:  عدل سلطان ابو سعيد كوركان, Adil Sultan Abu Sa’id Gurkan.
Host coin:
Obverse, second photo :
ضرب السلطان الأعظم شاه رخ  بهادر خلد الله ملكه وسلطانه  , al-Sultan al-‘Azam Shah Rukh bahadur Kallad Allah mulkahu wa sulatnahu.
The mint place is at the bottom (not visible).
Reverse first photo:
Central Kufic legend:
لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله   La ilah illa Allah, Muhammad rasulu-Allah
(There is no deity except God, Muhammad is the messenger of God)
Around in margin, the names of 4 orthodox caliphs with their titles:
(ابو بكر صديق \ عمر الفاروق \ عثمان بن عفان \ علي المرتضى)

Please note that the date is at 8 O'clock of second photo 8xx; could be “ 829 ٨٢٩ “, or " 809 ۸۰۹ " if the dot above the digit " 8 ۸ " is considered as a zero.

Coin collecting has a curious name. It is also called the "Hobby of Kings".

As always, very helpful. My conclusion is that Gurkan is a title or part of the name of the ruler, not a mint?

Thank you Peter, yes it is a title if the countermark is read from bottom to top " عدل سلطان ابو سعيد كوركان Adil Sultan Abu Sa’id Gurkan ".

Thank you Maythem,   the coin ticket said Gurkan mint but is clearly wrong as I have now discovered the word "Gurkani" derived from "gurkan", a Persianized form of the Mongolian word "kuragan" meaning "son-in-law"

Dear Vic, the word at the bottom of Kalima is " Muhammad محمد ". The letter after " Muhammad محمد " is " R ر " which is starting letter of the word " Rasul رسول " on top of the word Muhammad.
