Morocco issued a new design series in 1987.

The reverse of the aluminium 1 santim coin featured a tuna fish in a net. This was officially a FAO-themed design.

The 5, 10 and 20 santimat coins were all made of aluminium-bronze.

The reverse of the 5 santimat coin featured an ear of wheat, with the rising sun in the background. This was officially a FAO-themed design.

The reverse of the 20 santimat coin featured a clasp for a cloak or robe. Despite the theme, this was also officially a FAO-themed design.

The 1 santim and the 5, 10 and 20 santimat coins had a common obverse design that featured the Moroccan coat of arms.

The dirham and 1 dirham coins featured a portrait of King Hassan on the obverse. The coat of arms now moved to the reverse, and the year and the denomination were therefore shown alongside it.

The dirham and 1 dirham coins were both made of copper-nickel. Below you see the 1 dirham coin, with the standard portrait of the king.

The 5 dirhams coin was bimetallic, having an aluminium-bronze centre within a stainless steel ring.
