Baroda. Rupee ino Shah Alam II, Petlad Mint. Date off.
« on: June 07, 2018, 12:35:31 PM »
This 11.45 g rupee is a product of the Petlad mint. It was minted by Anand Rao Gaekwad during the reign of Shah Alam II. These coins generally miss the date (both RY and AH) and the mint name. I was fortunate to have come across this coin which shows the clear maint name (though only partially) and can be authoritatively attributed to Petlad.

Isn't that regnal year 5 at 8 o'clock on the left picture? Compare lot #251 in this auction, which is identified as RY 20.

No Peter. That is the 'He' of Shah in the Badshah Gazi and the line over that is the Sha of Shah Alam (II).

The coin which shows the date as RY 20 is a different coin since the legend engraving is different and the lot to its left does not show a date.
