AR dinar Chagatayids, Tirmidh, AH 726
« on: February 03, 2018, 01:41:15 AM »
This is a nice silver coin of descendants of Genghis Khan, from the time of khan Tarmashirin, who reigned from AD 1326-1333. It's larger than the dirhams and about twice as heavy. In the left picture, about 8 o'clock, there's a clear numeral '28'', I suppose for 728. The right picture shows the Chagatayid tamgha: sort-of glasses and a tight 'mouth'. The left figure I can't interpret. It is a ‘Twins’ type with text on the coin العدل و الملك توأمان "Kingship and Justice are twins".
The mint, Tirmidh, is now known as Termez, an important crossing of the Amu Darya in the utter south of Uzbekistan.

AR dinar Chagatayids, temp. khan Tarmashirin (726-734). Tirmidh, AH 728 (=1328). 32 mm, 8.17 gr. Album 1992; ICV 1983.

What still does not stop to amaze me in the coinage from this region and era is the new-found co-habitation of formal Islamic arab texts and  the traditional pictographic language. The combination of Tamghas/pictograms on this specimen is a striking example of this for me. I think the basic principle in coin design was that people should be provided with coinage they can relate to, otherwise it won't be accepted.

That’s right, the grandparents of the people using these coins were still shamanists, not muslims.
