Afghanistan Qandahar Paisa KM 960.2 (and 960.1)
« on: November 30, 2017, 01:43:57 PM »
Hello,

I don't find any topic about the Qandahar Paisa KM-960.2 so it may be good to open one as I get few of these coins in my collection.
Those coins were overstrucked on Iranian 50 Dinars Y-4 and are dated AH1322 (AD1904)

Other host exist as Muscat and Oman, British East India Company and Oman Quarter Anna, but they are scarcer (KM 960.3, 960.4 and 960.5).
Similar overstrucked coins also exist for the Herat and Ghazni mints.

A topic is open about KM 960.1 see here http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php/topic,29766.msg189989.html#msg189989

First a picture of my coins including an example of KM 960.1 (on the right side)
You an see the various colours they have in spite of a common host (I can't attribute the host of one of them because of excessive wearing)

no more than the information given by KM :
"With the inception of machine struck coinage in AH 1308 / AD 1891, the provincial mints were closed and all minting was centralized at Kabul. However, few base metal coins were struck at Kabul, and old metal coins, as well as foreign copper coins, circulated in Afghanistan. After nine years, the Kabul mint suspended the production of copper coins (1317 AH), the consequent was the sanctioning of privatestriking at Herat and Qandahar, where coins were struck from about AH 1322 until AH 1323. Royal coinage in copper and brass resumed in AH 1329, and the private mints were soon afterwards suppressed. Further, private striking took place in AH 1337-38 / SH 1298-99. The minting place, probably Kabul, is not shown on these coins. The local coinage is quite crude, and is usually counterstruck on older afghan and foreign coins."

Fine ! your 1st  one seems to have been  re-struck twice as it seems that there are remains of a former arabic legend on reverse of the british host coin ( Victoria Empress 1/4 anna,  I suppose ?)
Did you identify the mintname ...
