Qarakhanid fractional AR dirham?
« on: October 23, 2017, 10:47:37 PM »
Can you help me with this one? A fractional dirham of silver or billon, rather maltreated, but what's left is in very reasonable condition. Only 14.5 mm and .58 gr. About a quarter of the coin is missing! Still... a nice one. Looks Qarakhanid, somebody told me it's from Khojand in Sogdia, 25 miles directly south of Almaligh.
I don't believe a date is readable, but maybe some of you can read a suzerain name?

It seems that it is the same type as Zeno #151889.
Can you please provide more info pictures?

I think you are right, thanks! Would that be a quarter dirham? Allowing for the damages, the weight is comparable. Measuring the intact diameter, it is almost 15 mm. The design is the same and the text inside the circle appears to be the same.
But I'm less sure about the outer circle texts. Is the mint and date at the obverse (Kalima side), about 2 o'clock?
I can upload a more detailed enlargement of that part. These pics were made with the Figleaf whiskeyglass method (the others with a 600px scanner).

Thanks for new photos. The mintmark 'خجند' is highlighted. Mansur b. Ali (Arslan-khan) and Muhammad b. Ali (Ilek) are on this coin.
Qarakhanid fractional dirhams are  really enigmatic. It will be nice to write a small notice on this coin (for example, for academy.edu).

Dmitry, I know no one better qualified to write them up than you to write up Qarakhanid fractional dirhams. Consider yourself encouraged.

That overlay should inspire you (it inspired me).
