Rhodesia: design continuity
« on: October 15, 2017, 01:59:43 PM »
Looking at the design continuity of Rhodesian coinage is somewhat complicated, because it experienced various coinages:

1] Southern Rhodesia.

2] Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

3] Rhodesia: predecimal and decimal coinages.

4] Zimbabwe.

Rhodesia's national flower, the flame lily, first appeared on the Rhodesia and Nyasaland 3 pence.

It next appeared on the Rhodesian sixpence of 1964.

Rhodesia: 5 cent coins: left, 1973; right, 1975.

Finally, it appeared on Zimbabwe's 1 cent coin, first issued in 1980.

The pick axe handle first appeared on Southern Rhodesia's half crown.

It also appeared on Southern Rhodesia's commemorative crown of 1953.

It appeared on the Rhodesian shilling of 1964.

It also appeared on the Rhodesian 10 cents, and also on the Rhodesian coat of arms.

Rhodesia's coin designs always included a sable antelope.

Southern Rhodesia, 2 shillings, 1937.

Rhodesia and Nyasaland, 1 shilling, 1955.

Rhodesia, 25 cents / 2 shillings and 6d, 1964.

Rhodesia, 25 cents, 1975.

A sable antelope also appeared on the Rhodesian gold 10 shillings coin of 1968.

No sable antelope has so far appeared on the Zimbabwean coinage.
