Ghorid base dinar
« on: June 16, 2017, 02:58:46 AM »
This is a very interesting coin to my taste, another base dinar. It doesn't look like gold or silver, more like billon with an uncontrolled mix of metals. There's a little golden corner in the lower left of the honeycomb, but also some vague bronze green spots on both sides. It feels notably heavier than it looks with its 23 mm and its ordinary thickness. According to Album, there should be 10-20% gold in it. I hope someone can help reading it. In the honeycomb cells is the word 'Malik'.

Ghorid heavily debased dinar of sultan Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad bin Sam (AH 558-599 or 1163-1203). Album W1754 mentions three mints: Firuzkuh, Taliqan and Herat. 23 mm, 4.21 gr. See Zeno #139504. This coin, only I washed it in Bruce's mix.

Nice aquisition. I especially like the modern look of the geometri pattern. Quite avant-garde design for that period. Unfortunately can only read fragments on the other side in your photo.

Thanks! I'm ready to picture parts of the coin, if that helps. A year, a mint... On which part can one find these?
The calligraphy is attractive, but it doesn't help reading.

Year and mintname i would expect in the margin text here. On smaller coins the mint is sometimes at the top or the bottom of the center text, but usually not on the larger types.

Well, there's not much margin left. And anyhow it is not easy to make a picture of this. I would be happy to show it sometime in real life.
