Jersey sketch 1989 - prep for 1990s series.jpg

In 1989 the Jersey States Treasury was looking for a new idea for a series of pound coins.

It decided on a series celebrating Jersey's shipbuilding industry of the 1800s.

The Royal Mint produced a rough sketch of a pound coin featuring such a vessel.

Jersey was pleased with the result. However, the Royal Mint's sales director tried to persuade Jersey that such a design would look better on a larger coin, rather than the small pound coin. However, Jersey was not persuaded. The Jersey Treasury provided some illustrations of ships built locally in the 19th century.

When looking at the sketches that follow, bear in mind the previous memos. Some of the same sketches appeared several times, scattered throughout the documents, so it is not possible to date them. I will therefore post them in a random order, so at least you can enjoy the variations.

Some of the scans are of the same design, but the scans themselves are of different quality.

Notice that the bowsprit obscures part of the legend / text in some of these designs.

Jersey pound sketch-Jersey seal of 1844 to 1870.jpg

The Jersey seal used from 1844 to 1870.

This also appeared on a pound coin of the series.

I would appreciate it if some kind member(s) would post images of the eventual issued coins. I know there are several collectors of the coins of the Channel Islands among you. However, this is a rather lonely board, with few responses from the members, so my plea will probably go unheeded.  :(

Here you are. They are off-metal proofs, but I think the design is the same.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
