The Netherlands: New mintmaster mark 2016/2017
« on: November 23, 2016, 03:22:43 PM »
In November 2016, Kees Bruinsma has resigned as interim mintmaster of Royal Dutch Mint. It is not yet known who will succeed him. It is also unknown if any 2016-dated coins will be minted with a new mintmaster mark.

The majority of the 2015-dated Dutch coins were minted with the mintmaster mark 'Sails' from Maarten Brouwer. After he had to resign, Kees Bruinsma became interim mintmaster of the Royal Dutch Mint in December 2015. Following tradition, an interim mintmaster at the Royal Dutch Mint is allowed to add a small thing (usually a star) to the mintmaster mark of his predecessor. Mr Bruinsma chose for a star which was added to the mintmaster mark 'Sails' of Maarten Brouwer. In December 2015 also an unknown amount of 2015-dated coins was minted with the mintmaster mark of Kees Bruinsma. These coins have yet to be released.

The 2016-dated circulating coins from the Netherlands that have so far been released have the mintmaster mark from Kees Bruinsma (Sails with star) but it is possible that coins will be minted in December 2016 with a mintmaster mark from the new mintmaster who won't be interim and so - following tradition-  is allowed to choose a completely new mintmaster mark.

Interesting, is there a crisis at the Dutch mint?  Will 2017 see sails with two stars?!

Thanks for the news! :) I just looked him up, and it seems he joined the KNM "crew" in November ...

Good news. Not a scrap metal dealer or a salesman but a financial man. Someone who knows about risk and which ones to take and which ones to reject or cover, not a technician who wants to do things because they are possible.

The KNM could do with a money man, ironically...

Same name, wrong guy. Sorry. The previous mint master is a few decades older.
