Iran - overstruck falus / Kashan
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:24:05 AM »
A overstruck Falus from Iran - but a little hard to work out anything else. Any ideas?

Turn the second picture 180° and you see a sunface. Compare Saro's coin here.

That's part of the enigma - the sunface is one way up the writing the opposite - working out which was first is kinda tricky :)

only few parts of the legend are present : "zar(b) falu(s) Ka.."
with very few doubt the mint name is "Kashan"..

For the fun, I have tried to analyse the 1st picture...
With a 180° rotation, it shows remnants of previous strikings ( 2 or 3 ? may be), and with some reserve (...) I suggest that we have a first re-strike of Behbahan on an old undetermined coin which has been then overstruck at Kashan twice...
1st striking : Behbahan ("Beh... "only present / green letters of the sketch) but it's the only mint name which could fit, I think.
2nd striking : Kashan ("zarb falus Kashan" & sun on reverse / blue letters)
3rd strike : Kashan with "zarb Kashan" over the sunface of the previous strike / no new reverse it seems for this 3rd strike ?
(may be we have remnants of "Mulkh" on the old mother coin /orange letters)

Anyway, Kashan is confirmed (twice may be  :))...

Thanks very much Saro - the double strike is part of it's charm :)

I am awed, saro. I have never seen anyone getting three dies out of four on a completely overstruck coin. I feel a hero when I et one underlying coin.
