BE 2016: Child Focus
« on: March 27, 2016, 07:56:31 AM »
The theme was reported earlier but wasn't confirmed. I saw this image on eBay today, so the issue is can be confirmed now  ;). Is this design also final?

Mintage will be 2 million.

Not sure; I hope that this will not be it. In another forum somebody wrote that the design reminded him of Chucky. >:D  The mix of language is also a little strange: country name in French, Dutch and German - theme in English, French and Dutch? Oh well ...

Well, it came from Mr Schön, a trusted source, so I don't think there will be a different design.

I would have preferred it less creepy indeed, but that's the world where Child Focus is working. It is the Foundation for Missing and Sexually Exploited Children. They are very known in Belgium for their efforts in the looking for missing and disappeared children. As their name says the foundation is also fighting against children pornography, children's prostitution and seks tourism with children abuse. So, the world this foundation is working in is very scary and creepy indeed.
And even when the design doesn't look comfortable or beautiful, I prefer this subject above the non-events which are commemorated in many commemorative 2 euro coins.

I guess nobody here has anything against the subject of this coin, but the mingle-mangle of languages seems not logical to me ...  :o

Looks as if the designer copied the country's names from other Belgian coins, but doesn't have any knowledge of the (his?) country's languages.
I would call this simply an error coin.

Agreed about the trusted source. But there is hope regarding the look; two weeks ago he posted a note about "possible modifications" of the design. Would not mind that. ;)

Is Child Focus happening? Not really, it's not a big event that needs to be commemorated. It has a web address on it, it's promoting something.

I assume child focus is an NGO?
Something I think more worthy than some of the other commemoratives about (sports coins being one example, Beatrix Potter another)
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....

Perhaps more worthy than these, but then Beatrix Potter and some of the sporting coins shouldn't be made either.

The boy on the coin is Liam Van den Brande, who disappeared 20 years ago. His parents were not informed. The official explanation is that the news was leaked prematurely.

Planned mintage is 1.020.000.

From that article: "De Nationale Bank van België brengt volgende maand een nieuw muntstuk van 2 euro in omloop." But as Niels wrote, the NBB will not actually distribute the pieces, and the term "circulation" should not be taken literally if the coin has to be purchased ...

As for the depicted child, I find it hard to recognize one specific person there. Liam's photo may have inspired the designer, but in my opinion that is about it.

They really shouldn't be putting anyone on the coin. Imagine if this kid turned up as a 30 year old, only to find that his image had been used on coins, they'd look really stupid then.
