Hi,

please have a look at this and give me your opinions?

Thank you in advance

This is 2003N, Type C lion. KM 121.5.

The height of Lions is not relevant for Type A/B/C/D.
For the Lions, the first step you determine if its Type A/B or Type C/D.
This is very easy. Type A/B has furs that are angular.
Type C/D have it straight.

Once you identify, the next step is easy if its Type A/B count the fur lines to determine A or B.
If its C/D, you look at the center to determine if the hair are recut.

Hi,

thanks, but on my coin, the fur doesn't help at all, so I went for the "secondary" distinctions, the height of the column, which cannot just be discarded like that?

I have 2000(N), 2001(N) and 2003(N) (possibly others) and all seem to have an obverse as seen with your 2003(N).

As with your piece the fur rows cannot really be properly counted on these pieces I have - this is not due to wear of the coin but because of the lack of detail from the die.

For these KM-121.3, 121.4, etc.. types generally.. the large "2" below the column varies between each obverse type... I think for one of the obverses there are actually two varieties of the "2".

I do not re-call noticing it before but looking at these Noida mint pieces they are all in the style of KM-121.5, but the column height is 14mm rather than 13mm.

Or does someone have a different obverse on a 2003(N) standard design 2 Rupees to that shown on Ole's piece ?

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

Maybe the images are not clear. In the oval section that I have highlighted, you will find the Fur as below. It may take time to notice it, I definitely look more at Indian coins so maybe its very evident.

Type A Better Images from Numista. Focus on the Oval area I have highlighted in my earlier post.

Type B, Better images. This at times is slightly difficult as the die wear may at times make it seem as Type A. i.e. Furs can't be distinguished

Type C Lion. Notice the Fur. Its very different to Type A/B.
Over a period; it would just take a glance to distinguish Type A/B Vs Type C/D

To My knowledge the Big / Small 2 are quite prevalent in the Type C, KM 121.5 for years 2002 and 2003 from Kolkata and Hyderabad Mint.
I have not seen Big / Small 2 variations for other types in same year.

From 1992 to 1998, Noida Mint used Type B Lion. Issued only in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998
From 1998 to 2003, Nodia Mint used Type C Lion. Issued all years.
So on Noida Mint only for Year 1998 you have both Type B and Type C issues.
