Central Bank of Oman launches new commemorative coins

December 26, 2015 | 9:11 PM

Muscat: Central Bank of Oman (CBO), on the occasion of the 45th National Day 2015, announced the issuance of New Circulation Coins of 100, 50, 25, 10, and 5 baizas with effect from today. The issuance of the new commemorative set of coins will be offered for sale at OMR6.500.

These new coins will circulate as legal tender along with the existing circulation coins.

The new coins on the front side depicts the name and title of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said; national emblem, name of the Central Bank of Oman, year of minting, and denomination in Arabic and English while the back side depicts the 45th National Day Logo.

Are they circulating commemoratives or circulation coins?
In other words, are these designs to be repeated in later years?

There's no information about the new series on Central Bank's website yet. My feeling is that it's a year specific set as it would look quite strange to have a logo on 45th National Day in 2016 or in later years...

100 Baiza is no longer a circulation denomination although Oman had a circulation coin of that denomination in 1983. However, it must be the first time that a commemorative coin set has been issued for all range of denominations, if they indeed are commorative coins.

Also these coins " national day " are very nice !

A question :
the "national day " is  the anniversary of independence?

I am told that Onan issued a commem set in 1990 too.
Does any one have the details?

The national day in Oman is the anniversary of the birthday of Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said.

That is correct, in 1990 they issued a commemorative series of coins to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the national day.
