The Government will shortly release coins of 200th Birth Anniversary of Tatya Tope.

The denomination of the coins will be Rs 200 and Rs 10.

This makes the first coin with the denomination of Rs 200.

No one knows the exact date, the year is 1814. So essentially it should have been 2014 for 200 years, but we all know how things work.

Wasn't Tatya Tope one of the personalities shown on ₹5 coin issued in 2007 commemorating Indian Rebellion of 1857?

Yes, he was.

Strangely, of the three heroes of 1857, he was considered least important but he may be commemorated before more illustrious peers. The other two were Nana Phadanvis and Rani Laxmi Bai.

Dheer: Is there a news article or a government notification that provided this information? Or is it information from someone in the Mints or Finance Ministry? Just curious. Thanks.

Agree with you. Most common men know Mangal Pandey before others :)

There was a generic news article quite sometime back. But recently confirmed by Ravishankar that Kolkata mint would be releasing this.

The basic design is proposed by either Mumbai
Mint or Kolkata mint.
As soon as Kolkata mint gets any order, the news is immediately leaked.
It is not always that set of designs will be actually resulting in a new coin.

This is only 5th of the nearly 20 steps involved.

Great, thanks for the reply. Honestly, if some of the upcoming issues including Lala Lajpat Rai, Ambedkar and Tatya Tope move to next year that be best. Isn't it? Next year anyways appears to be filling up quite much, with Pandit Deendayal, Biju Patnaik, BHU Centenary and some other icons that the federal government might decide to commemorate (recall a total of 11 commemorations in 2015-2016).

P.S. Who is Ravishankar. Apologies for my ignorance.

dheer

Ravi Shankar Sharma is a Kolkata based well know numismatist. He runs a minting press for medals etc for living and is an ardent collector of Republic and British India. He along with Rajgor and Mayank have written a book on Mints Sets of India.

OK got it. Thanks for the response. Quite unfamiliar with the coin collector scene. Hoping to learn and build better understanding, including participation on here.

Additional details for this coin are now available. As it was mentioned in earlier posts, a 200 rupee and a 10 rupee coin will be released. The reverse face of the coin will have an image of Tatya Tope along with the inscription '200th Birth Anniversary of Tatya Tope' in English and Devnagiri script. The year 2015 will also be inscribed below the portrait.

If Tatya Tope's year of birth is 2014 (no official confirmation), it doesn't make sense to write 2015 on the coins. If someone has contacts in the Finance Ministry it be prudent to reach out and put a note to the Coinage Division regarding some recent oddities with the years on the coins.

Also attaching an image of the dimensions and composition of the coins. It be great if the date of release is determined by one of the members.

Well as the notification is out, looks like pretty soon ...
