The famous Krause & Mishler is now online: www.numismaster.com
And it is free, provided one is interested only in looking up coins. Additional info such as prices will cost you an annual fee.

I registered and tried the site. It shows great potential, yet manages to disappoint deeply. The search function will on the whole work only if you already know what you have. You cannot search on parts of a legend, let alone on design items. Moreover, just selecting a country is frustratingly slow and difficult, yet necessary.

You can maintain a want list, but rather than letting the data base fill in the cards, you have to copy the data by hand. You can have a "portfolio" list of recent purchases, which is just as clumsy. All the while, the site is excruciatingly slow.

The software is full of problems, ranging from the inability to find Finnish copper coins to the inability to show diacritical characters. Moreover, the listing are full of small inaccuracies, like using European Economic Community instead of European Union and giving the composition of the nordic gold euro coins as copper plated steel. I discovered all these problems trying to get one coin, a Finnish 5 cent on my want list. The process took almost 10 minutes, including finding out how to add a coin to the list.

There are problems that I am sure will be solved with time, such as the relative lack of pictures, but this site obviously needs a lot more work before it is useful to collectors. Still, it's the best of its kind, which is a sad comment in itself.

As a collector of (among other things) euro coins I noticed that they already included all standard eurocoins with the new European reverses, even those that will not be appearing before 2008.
This is against their standard policy of mentioning new coins only after they have appeared.
Also, this has resulted in an amazing though extremely funny error. For Monaco 2006 the database says: no issues. Apparently they are not yet aware that a Proof only coinset has been issued with new designs. And the database mentions for Monaco 2007 the repetition of the old (Rainier III) designs, now with the new European reverses. Shocked Shocked

Out of curiosity, does the free Numismaster search work for you? When I go to www.numismaster.com and click the "Find My Coin ... Free Search" button on the right, it takes me to some "secure.numismaster.com" page which, despite the suggestive name, is not secure as far as I can tell. Oh well, not a big deal. But then I select "World" as the coin origin ... and?

I tried the site before, and it would then have a pop-up list of countries. Now all I can do is enter some country name. When I hit the enter key, I get to the Default Login page. Before I start griping, I would like to know whether any of you have similar problems. Wink

Same result. This worked in the past, so it may be a temporary glitch or it may be "new functionality", a name given to any bug that cannot be repaired Wink I suspect the first though. I used the occasion to do the "forgot password?" routine and got nowhere very quickly and that ain't normal!

Haven't tried searching a coin on numismaster almost for a month, but it's really somewhat time consuming job Roll Eyes And as your coin becomes older, finding it on numismaster becomes significantly difficult.

And thanks to Tom (tsm),I have the rights to access their online price guide Smiley Though I do not use it so often, but I did suggest some changes in the catalog prices (for example Monaco 2007 CC-they had priced it at $45 for BU,when its issue price was 110 euro, and current market price is about $1200!! Cheesy )
