A set of two coins, Rs 125 and Rs 10 are slated to be released this year to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. Although this release should have occurred in 2013, but better late than never. It is believed that he was a learned man and a respected head of state. It would be safe to assume this coin release on Teacher's Day 05th Sep this year. Let's wait and see.

Logically speaking, it should be on 5th September. But governments do not think logically... ;)

We can relate this to the fact that Mints are independent for profit companies under spcmil. Previously they were a division of RBI. ;D

Re-striking already issued commem coins was the bright idea of Mr. shau, who happened to be the first DGM Marketing of SPMMCIL. Second idea was to issue stainless steel 5/- coins for commemorative coins released in Copper Nickel during 2004 to 2008.
Now, not minting smaller denominations ( 50 paise and 1 Rupee) as they are not financially viable, giving capacity constraint is another step. Insisting on more 10 Rupees commemoratives than 5/- commemorative coins is in same story.

Hi...

Absolutely right...like in Philately, issue coins in abundance without any rhyme or reason lacking imagination, which hardly attract International Attention from collectors....only Indian Collector are interested and run after these...after all the departments are run by bureaucrats for whom normal coins and commemoratives are one and the same and for working there is a 10 to 5 job....why can't the Government appoint some one well versed and knowledgeable about coins and its importance.....rather than issue coins like puppies.....at this rate Government will kill this wonderful hobby.....

If you attend ministry of finance committee meeting on coinage, you will get to know why it happens that way.
Can not be described in words but numismatists are the last persons in the minds of members. It is a major political upmanship that prevails.

,

Correct, even I feel the same.
They should give importance to the quality of coin as in the design, significance .. and not to the quantiity   >:(.

Here's an article from Indian Express that talks about the coin release on 04th September by the Prime Minister of India. Hoping this is true!
