Finland 2015: Jean Sibelius
« on: January 21, 2015, 03:29:05 PM »
This year's first Finnish €2 commemorative will be issued on February 18. It commemorates 150th birth anniversary of Jean Sibelius. The design is same as €10 and gold €100 collector coins already issued with the same theme...

In case anybody wonders what is depicted (many Finnish coins have "non-obvious but intriguing" designs ;) ), here is some info based on what the mint says: The coin depicts the starry sky of Ainola and a copse of pine trees, among which Sibelius was often seen lost in thought.

I agree. A very interesting attempt to capture the man's thoughts, rather than the umpteenth portrait. I wish it would be less necessary to have an explanation, but I am happy they tried something a bit more complicated and less obvious.
