I received this Austrian coin earlier this week; must be one of the 'oldest' Austrian coin I have! However I hardly know anything about it, would appreciate any help. :)

Thanks in advance!

Aditya

1978 !!!

1978 - 700th anniversary of "being declared a city" of Gmunden

Stadterhebung = literally "cityuplifting"  ;D
In the middle ages the king, emperor or any other reigning entity could declare a village into a "city", which had several rights (the market right for example). So he lifted up (erheben) the rigths of a village into those of a city.

Whoops, it's 1978! :o It's no more one of the 'oldest' Austrian coin in my collection! ;D

Thanks for the information, Afrasi. Appreciate it. :)

I am not sure but think the design is the castle Schloss Ort. It was founded in 1080 and is in a lake. There should be some Spa and Resort tokens from Gmunden.

Here is a Gmunder Heller  :)

Almost. That is a Gmünder Heller - from the city of Schwäbisch Gmünd. :)

I supose the coat of arms was the clue I didn't research, taking Gmunder for granted as Gmunden.
Thanks for pointing out the difference.  Also, I think the beastie has too many joints in his front legs  ;)

I am disappointed it isn't an Austrian token so now it doesn't really fit in my collection. Oh well, it looks good.

The coin looks better though  :)

Yeah, somewhat odd. Then again, who knows what a unicorn actually looks like. ;D  I would keep that Swabian piece; if we ignore the leg joints, the side with the seal does look good ...

The Austrian Gmunden coin, well, the castle does look impressive. What I find a little disappointing is that the coin design does not show (or hint at) the location in the lake. And the obverse, uh. Helmuth Gsöllpointner created that square design in the mid-1970s (first used on the Staatsvertrag coin, 1975). It does look interesting but does not correspond to any of the reverse designs that it was combined with.

If you look very closely at the bottom and sides you can see stylized waves. It isn't really noticable so you have to know it is there and know about the lake to recogonize it.

Thanks for that close-up, Dale! Now I do indeed see some water there. :)
