THCoins

The wear on the high points suggest it is guilded, not gold.
This will be a German 19th century "Taufe Medaille". It was given to a child (or its parents) to commemorate its baptism and entry as a church member.

Afrasi

Yes, a "Taufmedaille" given to a baptized child by his godfather (German: Pate).

"Wer glaubt und getaufft wird, der wird selig werden." (Mark 16, 16)
English ~ He who believes and will be baptized, he will be beatific.

"Mein pat gedenck,
bey dem Geschenck,
der Christenpflicht,
vergiss ia nicht,
was ich versprach,
und kom ihm nach."
Actually I am too tired to translate it in modern German and English ...  ;)

Figleaf

#3
think of your godfather
when you see this gift
your christian duty
forget it not
that I have promised
and fulfill it

Switch some of the lines around to get a better understanding if need be.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
