Beasts of French Africa

France used to have quite a few colonies in Africa, and the same animals appeared on many of the designs. Not only that, but various countries retained these designs, or variations on them, when they became independent. The issue is further complicated by the fact that two currency unions developed in former French Africa: the Central African States, and the West African States. Their coins are often of similar design, but the legends that come with them have varied considerably over the years.
