Some more Golden horde coins
« on: December 22, 2013, 04:06:16 PM »
Peter showed a nice silver golden horde (Juchid) coin recently. That was a nice incentive to see if i could add some.

The golden horde Khans ruled a large area in central Asia from what now is Oezbekistan (Named after one of the earlier rulers Öz Beg Khan). At the hight of their power their supremacy reached upto Moscow.
In later times the decline of the Golden horde set in mostly due to internal rivalry.

The first coin i show is a dang of Birdibek (also spelled Berdi Beg) who ruled from 1357-1359.
Birdibek came to power after killing twelve of his brothers and also his son. Subsequently he was murdered also after a short rule.

Dang AR 16 mm 1.56 grams. The inscription says:

- Al Sultan Al-Adil / Muhammed Birdi / Bek Khan.     (The Righteous Sultan...)
- Zarb / Serai / al-Jadid / 759.                               ( Struck in Serai al-Jadid, in the year AH759)

The second coin is of one of the rulers in a list of people who only held the throne for a very short period.
This is a Dang of Kidr Khan (also named Khizr in some references), ruler in 1360-1361, and killed by his own son.

AR 16 mm 1.55 gr.

Inscription:
- The Just Sultan /  Kidr Khan
- Struck in  Sarai / al Jadid

Super additions, Anthony. Thank you.

Peter
An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
