Yes, they do look very similar. But as for Malawi, a former British possession, what could be the French connection?

Malawi etc....  Yes a coincidence...

I seem to remember that the cockerel as on the Malawi coins is connected to Banda and/or his party and hence none of the coins of Malawi with dated or later include a cockerel.
