Stamps and coins to mark 50th year of National Museum

BY K. AGNES NESA MALAR

THE National Museum is turning 50 years old on Aug 31 and to celebrate its golden jubilee, the museum's management has organised interesting activities for visitors.

Special stamps and coins have also been produced to mark the occasion.

The museum was officially opened to the public on Aug 31, 1963 by Malaysia's third Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Putra Syed Hassan Jamalullail.

"We are happy to celebrate the museum's 50th anniversary and want to include the public," said National Museum Department director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ismail at a press conference held at the premises recently.

He said in conjunction with the celebration, 1.5 million special stamps have been created, featuring museums nationwide.

He said they would be sold at 60sen per piece.

Ibrahim said Bank Negara would also produce gold and silver coins in conjunction with the golden jubilee.

The stamps and coins will be launched by Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz during the official launch of the celebration.

Other activities include spending a night at the museum, cultural performances as well as mural drawing on a 150m-long canvas.
