Brazil has issued more than a few such coins since the 1970s, and I thought it would be interesting to bring them together in one place. It is one of the world's most fascinating and exotic countries, and while none of these Brazilian coins would be considered classic in any way, they certainly have a style all of their own.

Pretty Brasilia (or is she meant to be Liberty?) as she appears on the obverse

She looks very 1940s in style to my eye.

Brazil 5 cruzeiros  1981.jpg

Brazil, 1980, 5 Cruzeiros.  Coffee plant.

These coins all tend to be very small and made of steel, because of Brazil's very high inflation.

Nevertheless, they have a certain style.

Coins of 1989 and 1990.

Brazil reformed its currency in January 1989, when this new series was issued.

1  centavo.    Cattle farmer.
5  centavos.  Fisherman.
10 centavos.  Diamond miner.
50 centavos.  Weaver.

These are tiny coins. Can you see the head of the horse that the cattle farmer is sitting on?
