Heraldic, mythical, national and symbolic lions
« on: March 20, 2009, 09:58:35 PM »
This topic is intended for non-natural lions: heraldic lions, mythical and national lions, and symbolic lions (including those shown with humans).

Natural (realistic and lifelike) lions go here: Lions on coins

Mountain lions (also known as cougars or pumas) go here: Cougars / pumas / mountain lions

It is not possible to categorise all designs precisely, so inevitably a few entries may appear rather arbitrary.

Italy KM 61 shows a quadriga with Aequitas drawn by four lions.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Recent research has shown that the lions were stuffed (presumably from eating too many Christians) and mounted on wheels. The chariots actually had a combustion engine, as is shown by the picture from the film Gladiator.

Spain KM 855 shows a barrel on wheels (a wheelbarrel) drawn by lions. That leaves only the coin with the lion rider ...

A lion rider can be found in Georgia, on KM 79. I'd rather have a cat on my lap.

The lion is the loser on this one:

One of my favourite coin designs -- the 'Una and the Lion' £5, UK, 1839.

A medal, not a coin; but still my favourite tiger:

As has been said before, very much Una & the lion

In this case, it looks to me like Una and the tiger.
Never-the-less it is a beautiful design.

Peter already mentioned this one in reply #1, but why not add an image ... Federal Republic of Germany 1995; a 10 DM collector coin.
