Venad Cheras.  The batteaxe series of coins (c. 1118-1160). 

MCSI-454

Obv: Seated king in Chola style; to the right a 'battleaxe'; above right - a simplified version of Tamil 'Cha' ()
Rev: Standing figure in Chola style; to the right 'Lozenge' symbol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lozenge)

This coin is obviously connected to the coins of the Cholas. What is the connection?

Nice coin. Here is a scarcer variety of Venad Cheras, from my collection. Obv is the same, seated king, with battle axe to the right. Reverse, standing king with a fish to the left.

Bit late to read this thread. Both very nice specimen, but i love the last one with the fish !

Ditto!  Been meaning to find more of these coins, but it seems to be very difficult to find  :'(.  That is definitely a great specimen!!!

Ram, I vaguely remember seeing a similar Venad Cheras with fish specimen that you had uploaded somewhere. I couldn't find out where it is. Could you please upload it here, if you don't mind.
