Sudan, 20 piastres AH 1315, Omdurman, KM 15
« on: July 22, 2012, 07:00:15 PM »
Our French-speaking friends think this may be a fantasy based on an Ottoman gold coin. Perhaps so. I think it may be a bit too thick for that. I checked Iran and central Asia in KM without success. I can read the date 1315 (not a date that would figure on Ottoman coins) and below zarb is the name of a mint I cannot read. Is there a denomination below the toughra?

Thanks andyg. That's a billon coin, but that could be anything from light to improper cleaning. At least now I know how to spell Omdurman in Arabic. :)

This type with 1315/8 is nearly always in pure copper, some pieces have traces of a slight silver wash lime the following one http://www.numismatik-cafe.at/gallery/image_page.php?album_id=46&image_id=5790
Only one piece I know completely silver washed, but this can be made also in modern times ...

I now have a similar type coin, thanks to the indefatigable andyg ... but is it dated 1312, 1313 or even 1314 (Persian 4)? High-res picture available...

Yes, no doubt: 1312 / 12, KM #26

Here is one of the less common pieces, which has a date error (1302 instead of 1312):

On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays it looks like 1312 to me too, but on Mondays and Saturdays and in different light I see something sticking out of that 2 that makes it look like a 3. While it could even be a Persian 4, I don't suppose the Sudanese used Persian type numbers...

No doubt! 1312!

If you have seen enough such pieces, you will be sure, too.
