Small, 3.1 grams, this coin has also proven to be a mystery to me.  What I have identified as the obverse is in decent condition.  The reverse is more problematic.  I bought it as an unidentified "ancient Indian coin".   What a category!

This is a Malwa-type issue of either Jahangir or Shah Jahan. Mint is Ujjain. On the left image you may read Falus Ujjain. I will try to find some references later.

I agree with Osheo. It is clearly Ujjain Mint Falus.

Thank you Oesho and thank you Shariq. I have no problem accepting your designations, but I do have difficulty in attempting to read "falus" or "Ujjain".

I can see a "Fa", if the dot inside the loop is a creative way to render the letter "Fa".
I can see a "Nun". If that is the ending of "Ujjain", then I guess I am making progress.

Dear Richie,
I initially thought Jahangir or Shah Jahan, but it is Akbar. Obv. you may observe the loop of Seen on the top and (F)alu below. On the bottom line: (Ujj)ain. The reverse has the date in Persian. The date might be 994 (from top to bottom): Nhasad (wa)/ Sanah / Nuwd wa Char).  Ref.: KM#46.1; Punjab Museum Lahore #572.

Rangnath

Thanks for helping me with the letters.  I can see the "Fa" in Falus and the "ain" in Ujjain.  The attribution of Akbar and the possible date are quite wonderful news. Your resources (a coin catalog of the Punjab Museum in Lahore?) and your facility with them are just awsome.

Here is a diagrammatic representation of the legend. The specimen I have seems to be dated 99(5).

Just in case, Overlord reported here that this catalogue (3 volumes) is available free online.

Most excellent, museum quality coin with magnificent analysis, Overlord. Thanks.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Fantastic coin Overlord. The work og your pen on the coin makes it even better........The strike is deep and looks as if it was just minted .......

Unfair! Just when I thought I could work it out with your graphic analysis, there seems to be more lettering to the right of falus. Don't tell me it says "made by Og" :D

The alif as demonstrated has not been located on a single coin to date. Chainpur is the probable mint.
