Algeria 5 centimes 1970 variety
« on: May 15, 2012, 04:24:00 PM »
I was doing some filing and noticed that this coin seems to come in two distinct sizes. From the illustration in KM (KM 101) I presume that the larger (22 mm) is the standard, as this is the one illustrated -- i.e. the same diameter as the 1974 and later issues. The reverse of this is illustrated below (4216).

But there's also a smaller version which has a diameter of 21 mm (both sides illustrated below, 8037). This is the same diameter as the 1964 5 centimes, which is also noticeably smaller in the photograph in KM. But while the 1964 coin is also much thinner than the standard 1970 one, and weighs 0.8 g compared to 1.5 g, the small 1970 coin is much closer to the large version in both thickness and weight (1.3 g). Therefore as far as I can see it's not a question of 1964 blanks having been used to produce some of the 1970 coins.

Has anyone else come across this oddity or can anyone shed any light on the discrepancy? My edition of KM says 'varieties exist' but doesn't elucidate further.

Many thanks for sharing this observation! I did not knew this variant. Looking at my pieces I found two different ones, too.  :D
According to Schön these coins were made at the Kremnica Mint (Slovakia). Perhaps You can ask there for more informations.

Hi,

I have just verified my 4 coins km101 and here is the data:

Algeria, 5 centimes 1970 (ND) km101
coin   weight   diam   thick   grade
1   1,52   21,97   1,73   unc
2   1,44   21,94   1,56   vf-
3   1,48   22,01   1,73   vf-
4   1,50   22,01   1,85   xf

average   1,49   21,98   1,72

At least your variant is not common, since I have had maybe 100 of those coins in my hands and never observed any "small" ones. Lucky you!

Best regards
Ole

...Has anyone else come across this oddity....

I stumbled across it years ago when I was doing some upgrading. I measured my two different examples of KM101 last night; one is 21mm and 1.37gr, the other is 22mm and 1.49gr.
