1995 was a bumper year for commemorative coins: there were three main themes, all of them related. Some countries commemorated the end of World War 2 or even their own liberation; others commemorated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, which was founded in the aftermath of that war; while others celebrated 50 years of the Food and Agricultural Organisation, itself an agency of the UN.

The list of countries that issued coins commemorating the UN is interesting. Some countries, such as Switzerland and the USA, were unexpectedly missing; others, such as Cuba and Kazakhstan did, surprisingly, participate. The Isle of Man, for once, did not issue any coins to celebrate the anniversary, but then it is a dependency and neither a nation nor an independent state. Perhaps only members of the UN were invited to issue coins.

Some countries produced more than one commemorative coin, in lower and higher denominations, or in standard and bullion metals, but usually they carried the same reverse design. The UN had created a special 50th anniversary logo, which most participants incorporated in their designs. Some designs, however, were considerably more attractive and imaginative than others.

If I have missed the coins of any countries from the following posts, please let me know.
