King Sejong, the book he is holding should be the Hunminjeongeum, the Korean Alphabet ordered to be invented.
25000 Won, 1970, part of series "5000 Years of Glorious History of The Republic of Korea

Inventing an alphabet was nothing new in East Asia, the Japanese, the Jurchens, The Khitans, the Tunguts, and the Yuan Mongols all did it before the Koreans. However, the very fact that these aforementioned countries made their own alphabet presented an obstacle to the Koreans: that only "barbarians" make their own alphabets, and "civilized" people should use Chinese characters. King Sejong managed to overcome such a mentality and made a new alphabet.

Some Koreans believe Korean script was inspired by traditional lattice doors, so that children could be taught how to read with the help of the doors around them. Nice story, but I am not at all sure it's true. Nevertheless, the doors are wonderful.
