Netherlands 5 cents 1908.jpg

The Netherlands, 5 cents, 1908.  At last - a round coin!

Figleaf

The broad rim on the Dutch coin was added in the hope that it - and the unusual thickness and the missing portrait - would help people to distinguish this cu-ni coin (a novelty at the time) from the silver 25 cents pieces. It didn't work.

Think of the UK 1797 series. See also here for more round items with a broad rim.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

I've seen another 20th century circulation coin with a wide rim that looks very similar to the Dutch coin, but I can't remember which one it was.

Would it be the Portuguese low denominations in the early part of the 20th century as per this example?

5, 10 and 25 agorot of 1960

Do you mean these "TV screen" shapes?

They are not wide all the way round.

The Israeli 1 agora coin of 1960.

Or did you mean this scalloped coin?

Yes, on reflection I think that is correct.

An excellent candidate that you have found.

That Portuguese coin also came in a bronze version.

The bronze 10 centavos coin was of a similar shape and design.
