« on: January 22, 2012, 02:37:28 PM »
Obverse - seemingly - shop token for 1 Penny - Bon March (Wallsend) Limited - incorporated 4 May 1931...

BON MARCHE (WALLSEND) LTD    1D

Reverse - advertisement - though legends rather small for an advert - a company who sold bottles of ink (maybe more)...

VAN DER VELDE & Co SIDE. NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE

Bronze, about 32mm diameter.

Many letters in Bon Marche look doubled at the bottom.  Optical illusion?

The reverse, I should imagine, would appear to be that of the makers and one they used on their enamel badges.

Thanks. It doesn't quite say "tokens" in the advert - but this will the right answer... explaining why there was name and location only and just small lettering...

Likely many other tokens from the north-east of England were also made by this company.... but those all seem, to have legends of tokens issuer name, their location and the denomination - nothing of the maker. So worth finding.

"VAN DER VELDE & Co SIDE. NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE"

"Side" is the name of a street in central Newcastle, which may not be immediately obvious to non-Geordies!

This reference gives the address of VDV & Co as 32, "The" Side; I can only recall seeing it as "Side" previously:

I know the chap who posted this pic and the company's details from various Newcastle history and expat groups - I've asked him if he knows when VDV & Co were located at Side - presumably before they moved to Pilgrim St.

Found this:

SIDE.

Van Der Velde & Co., 44 ; Works, 5, Dean Street ;
Die sinkers, seal, brass, door, cart, window-plates,
and heraldic engravers. Est. 1862.

in the Commercial Directory of the Jews of the United Kingdom (London 1894), which can be read, searched or downloaded here.

This in this morning from Steve - sounds like he has the same directory as Peter:

According to the 1894 Kellys Directory Van Der Veide were at 44 Side and also at 5 Dean Street - trading as engravers. As you will know Side meets Dean Street under the railway viaduct so possibly the two premises were adjacent.

Kelly's directory is not the one Peter was referring to.

The "bottles of ink" advert I mentioned at the start of this topic had the address for Van der Velde as 30/44 Side, Newcastle-on-Tyne - this is actually on the label on an old ink bottle - to be seen at...
