Russia 50 Kp. 1907- fake or not ?
« on: November 19, 2011, 02:09:23 PM »
Hello,

Just bought this 50 kopeks in a lot of Russian coins.
It's probably fake, but how do you tell ?

It has the correct weight (9.9 gr.)

Thanks, Paul.

If weight and size are OK and you are convinced that it is silver, compare with a genuine coin. It looks the same as mine to me. Another thing to check is the edge inscription that should start with "2 золотника". The letters should be regular, well aligned and evenly spaced.

Peter
An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Am I convinced it's silver ? ... it sound silver-like ... the edge letters are black inside ...

The edge inscription looks OK too ...

Not sure why, but I'm still not sure ...  :D

Paul.

What makes you think it's fake? Anything physical about the coin, or are you just surprised you got it in a job lot for not much money? Although the aphorism 'if it looks too good to be true, it probably is' holds good in 999,999 out of a million cases, there is the occasional exception (like the German Kiautschau coin I got in a job lot of garbage that turned out to be worth £25-ish for the princely outlay of under 10p).

I can share SpaBreda's feelings. The letters look being in extremely fine condition, while the head and the eagle look only being in fine condition ...
But I'm not a specialist in Russian coins, so it's only this bad feeling I share.

I think it might be easily be genuine. Head is always in much lower condition than eagle as of shallow strike in the series. Not something that would be great faking. Weight is also very important...sound as well, as you said.
