Morocco to release new series of circulation coins 2011
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:26:20 PM »
Excellent news just in from our member africancoins. Morocco is due to release a new series of circulation coins, and with thematic designs at that, very soon:

http://www.yabiladi.com/articles/details/6319/dirham-nouvelle-serie-pieces-monnaie.html

A third series of coins, after those of 1987 and 2002, will be released in the coming days. The news was announced today, Tuesday, July 26, during a press conference in Rabat, by the director of Dar As-Sikkah, Lahcen Hadouni, the MAP reports. Two coins of this series, consisting of six different coins, will be put into circulation on Thursday, July 28, on the occasion of the feast of the throne: one dirham coins and 50 cents. Coins of 20 cents, 10 cents, five dirhams and 10 dirhams, will be issued from November 8, date of the commemoration of the Green March and Independence Day. The new Moroccan coins express the general theme of "Sustainable development and environmental protection." "The need to conserve biodiversity, the mass extinction of bees in the world, the essential shift to sustainable agriculture and preservation of the relationship between man and nature" are the major elements expressed in this new series. The architectural heritage of the kingdom will also be highlighted, through illustrations of the Hassan II mosque and Kalaat M'gouna.

Details of the coins can also be found here:

http://worldcoinnews.blogspot.com/2011/08/morocco-2011-new-coin-series.html

And here, in French, at the Bank al-Maghrib's web site:

http://www.bkam.ma/wps/portal/net/kcxml/04_Sj9SPykssy0xPLMnMz0vM0Y_QjzKL94o38gsGSZnFe8QbebvqR2KIuSDEfD3yc1P1g9KKgLKR5vE-8YY-7vpROanpicmV-mF5-UW5QHOD9b31A_QLckMjyn1SHQG4yCe5/delta/base64xml/L3dJdyEvd0ZNQUFzQUcvNElVRS82X0pfMk5T

Click on each denomination listed as "Type 2011".

Here is my rough translation of the French descriptions:

10 centimes: Bee and saffron flower.

20 centimes: The water lily and water protection.

½ dirham: Fish, coral, and the protection of the seabed.  *

1 dirham: National sovereignty.

5 dirham: Mosque of Hassan II, an architectural feat of the 20th century.

10 dirham: Kalâat M’gouna, a town in the heart of Morocco.

*  The species of the fish is not given.

The designs sure look attractive. I am a little skeptical when it comes to the buildings depicted on the 5 and 10 dirham coin; sometimes the details that a "drawn" design shows are hardly visible on the minted pieces. So if anybody gets one of these, please post an image or at least a comment. :)

Haven't they changed quite a bit, from fairly abstract to highly figurative, Magus? Or are you taking about the post-independent coins only?

On the 13th September I asked the Royal Mint the following questions:

Did the Royal Mint produce the new circulation series set for Morocco, dated 2011? If so, please could you tell me:

A] The name of the artist(s) who designed the reverses.
B] The name of the artist(s) who modelled the reverses.
C] The species of the fish that appears on the reverse of the half dirham coin.

I have just received the Royal Mint's reply:

The Product Design team have provided the details given below.

Thanks for asking, and providing the mint's reply! Will also be interesting to see what the actual coins look like, but so far I have not come across any images of the "real things" ...

I think the fish is what is known in French as a dorade (sparus aurata), a popular fish in French cuisine. The English equivalent seems to be gilt-head bream. I don't think I have ever seen that name on a menu.

A bee, what's with people and bees, they had one for the common 2 euro coin design competition that didn't win. Hmm!!

I like the bi metallic coins more than the other, they have stronger designs, especially the 5. The 20 is interesting too. First circulating coin ever with the world on it? I doubt it, but the first one I have ever noticed and said to myself "The first.....
